CBD vs CBG

Verdict

CBD is the abundant, well-studied hemp cannabinoid. CBG is the scarce precursor the plant converts into CBD and THC, and bulk CBG isolate costs about 1.7 times CBD isolate ($675 versus $395 per kilogram at one Oregon supplier, Go North Hemp). Choose CBD for daily value, CBG when you want a second non-THC cannabinoid.

CBD compared with CBG

Where it comes from in the plantCBDa in the flower's resin glands, decarboxylated to CBD by heat during extraction or processing.CBGa, the first cannabinoid acid the plant builds. Enzymes convert most of it to CBDa, THCa and CBCa before harvest.
AbundanceThe dominant cannabinoid in hemp bred for extraction.A minor cannabinoid in standard hemp. Most CBGa is used up making the others, so dedicated CBG-dominant cultivars are grown to get meaningful yields.
How it is produced for productsEthanol or CO2 extraction, winterization, distillation, then optional THC remediation or crystallization to isolate.Same extraction, from CBG-dominant biomass, then crystallization to 98%+ isolate. No conversion from CBD is needed.

CBD and CBG are both non-intoxicating cannabinoids from the same hemp plant. The difference is position in the plant's chemistry, how much the plant makes, and how much data exists. CBD is the finished product of a biosynthetic chain. CBG is the starting material.

Where does each one come from in the plant?

Hemp does not make CBD or CBG directly. It makes acids. The plant assembles cannabigerolic acid (CBGa) first, then enzymes convert CBGa into cannabidiolic acid (CBDa), tetrahydrocannabinolic acid (THCa) and cannabichromenic acid (CBCa). Heat during drying, extraction or cooking removes the carboxyl group (decarboxylation) and turns CBDa into CBD and leftover CBGa into CBG.

A 2021 pharmacology review puts it plainly: "cannabigerol (CBG) serves as the precursor molecule for the most abundant phytocannabinoids" (Nachnani et al., 2021). That is why CBG is sometimes called the "mother cannabinoid". It is not a marketing term; it is a description of the pathway.

Why is CBG so much scarcer than CBD?

Because the plant spends it. In a standard CBD hemp cultivar, nearly all of the CBGa is converted to CBDa before harvest, so mature flower holds a large CBD fraction and only a small CBG remainder. Growers who want CBG use cultivars with a reduced ability to run the downstream conversion, so CBGa accumulates instead. Those cultivars yield less total cannabinoid per acre, and the supply chain is thinner.

The price gap shows the scarcity. At one Oregon bulk supplier, CBD isolate at 99%+ purity lists at $395 per kilogram while CBG isolate at 98%+ lists at $675 per kilogram, about 1.7 times the price (Go North Hemp products.json). Both are plant-derived isolates, so the gap reflects biomass and yield, not a different process.

How is each one made into a product?

The processing is the same family of steps. Hemp biomass is extracted with ethanol or CO2, winterized to remove waxes, and distilled. For CBD, the distillate is either sold as full-spectrum, remediated to remove THC (broad-spectrum), or crystallized to 99%+ isolate. For CBG, processors start with CBG-dominant biomass and run the same path to a crystallized isolate. No chemical conversion from CBD is required, which matters under the federal hemp definition taking full effect December 11, 2026: CBG isolate from CBG-dominant hemp is a cannabinoid the plant naturally produces, not one "synthesized or manufactured outside the plant".

A formulator then dissolves the isolate into MCT oil for a tincture or a pectin base for a gummy. Because both isolates are near-pure powders, a blended product can be built to exact ratios, and the common daytime blend is 1:1 CBD to CBG.

What strengths are typical?

CBD products cluster at known points: 1,500 to 2,000 mg per 30 mL tincture, 25 mg softgels, and 25 to 30 mg gummies. The January 2025 KureLeaf sheet lists a 1,500 mg 30 mL tincture at $49 retail and 25 mg softgels, 30 count, at $36 (KureLeaf price list).

CBG products run lower per serving and are usually blended. The current Slumber catalog lists a 30 mg CBG isolate gummy (THC-free, 30 count, $60 retail) and a tincture at 25 mg CBG plus 25 mg CBD per serving (Slumber catalog). You will rarely see a 1,500 mg CBG-only tincture, because the ingredient cost makes it a niche product.

What has published research measured?

For CBD, the human pharmacokinetics are mapped. A 2018 systematic review found that after oral dosing, "Tmax is reached between 0 and 4 h", half-life was 1.09 to 1.97 hours after single 10 and 20 mg oral doses, and "Cmax is increased during fed states and in lipid formulations" (Millar et al., 2018). Oral bioavailability is low, which is why serving sizes in milligrams look large.

For CBG, the human record is short. The 2021 review states that "little research has been performed on this unregulated molecule" (Nachnani et al.). The first placebo-controlled human trial appeared in 2024: a double-blind crossover field trial gave 34 healthy adults 20 mg of hemp-derived CBG or placebo tincture in two sessions a week apart, and measured self-rated stress before and after a standardized stress task, a verbal memory test, and an impairment app. The authors reported changes in the stress ratings and the memory test relative to placebo, and no evidence of subjective drug effects or impairment (Cuttler et al., 2024). That is one small trial, funded and run in a field setting, and it measures acute ratings, not long-term use. It does not establish any effect of a retail product.

Neither cannabinoid is an approved ingredient. FDA's posted position is that CBD products "are excluded from the dietary supplement definition" and that adding CBD to food is a prohibited act (FDA CBD Q&A). The page does not address CBG by name, and CBG products carry the same structure/function labeling constraints.

What does each cost per milligram?

Using the verified sheets above: a 1,500 mg CBD tincture at $49 is about $0.033 per mg. A 30 count jar of 30 mg CBG gummies at $60 holds 900 mg, about $0.067 per mg. The retail gap (roughly 2x) is wider than the bulk gap (1.7x) because CBG runs in smaller batches and lower-strength formats, so packaging and labor are spread across fewer milligrams.

At bulk, $395 per kg of CBD isolate is $0.0004 per mg, and $675 per kg of CBG isolate is $0.0007 per mg. For a 30 mg serving, the ingredient cost difference is less than a cent. The retail difference is a format and scale effect, not an ingredient effect.

Which formats exist for each?

CBD comes in every format: tinctures, softgels, gummies, topicals, pet drops and water-soluble powders. CBG is mostly limited to gummies and tinctures, nearly always blended with CBD, and a bulk water-soluble CBG powder exists for beverage makers. Single-ingredient CBG products are uncommon.

How do they pair?

CBD is the base of nearly every blend. CBG is the usual daytime add-on, and when both are built from isolates the blend is THC-free and non-detect on the COA. If you want to try CBG, the lowest-risk move is a 1:1 blend at 25 mg each, with a COA that lists both cannabinoids by milligram and shows ND THC. Start with one product, hold it steady for a couple of weeks, and keep notes. Talk to a pharmacist or clinician first if you take prescription drugs.
