Adult Signature Required
Updated:
Adult Signature Required is a carrier delivery service in which the driver releases the package only to a person aged 21 or older who shows government ID. UPS requires it for every domestic shipment of hemp or hemp derivatives. It adds a per-package fee and stops drop-off without a signature.
Adult Signature Required is a delivery option carriers offer for age-restricted goods. The driver must obtain the signature of an adult at the delivery address and check government-issued identification before releasing the package. If no eligible adult is present the package is held or returned, not left at the door.
UPS makes it mandatory for hemp. Its policy states that all shipments within the United States containing hemp or hemp derivatives must use UPS Adult Signature Required service, and raw hemp must also be tendered under that service by pre-approved contract shippers (UPS). The same policy prohibits synthetic or lab-made cannabinoids, prohibits hemp derivatives meant for vaping, and bars pickups from any location that sells marijuana.
Starting December 11, 2026, UPS also requires a certificate of analysis showing total THC at or below 0.3 percent for raw hemp shipments (UPS), aligning its rules with the amended federal hemp definition.
The Postal Service takes a different approach. USPS permits domestic mailing of hemp and CBD products that meet the federal definition when the mailer complies with applicable law and keeps records, including lab results, for at least 3 years, and it prohibits them in international mail (USPS Pub 52 453.37). USPS does not require adult signature for hemp, though retailers often add it to meet state age rules.
