Glossary
Alkaloid fraction
Updated:
The total alkaloid content of a product, against which some states measure 7-hydroxymitragynine as a percentage: no more than 2 percent of the alkaloid fraction in Arizona, Colorado, Kentucky, Maryland, Nebraska, South Dakota, Texas and Wyoming, and 1 percent in Virginia and Mississippi. Different from a per-gram or per-serving cap.
Several state consumer-protection acts limit 7-hydroxymitragynine not in milligrams but as a share of all the alkaloids in the product. Texas prohibits products with 7-hydroxymitragynine above 2 percent of the alkaloid composition (Texas SB 497); Colorado's 2022 and 2025 acts use the same 2 percent figure (Colorado SB25-072). Virginia sets 1 percent of total alkaloids in the container, or 1 mg per serving, whichever is hit first (Va. Code § 59.1-200).
To check a fraction cap from a report, add the quantified alkaloids and divide the 7-hydroxymitragynine figure by the total. On the extract reports linked from this store the numerator is below the detection floor, so the fraction is effectively zero. The federal proposal uses a related but inverted test, the 100-to-1 ratio of mitragynine to 7-hydroxymitragynine, which is computed from the same two rows.
