Isolate

CBD isolate is cannabidiol purified to a crystalline powder, with terpenes, other cannabinoids and THC removed. It is flavorless, dissolves in oils, and is the simplest product class to verify as non-detect THC. Isolates of CBG, CBN and CBC are made the same way.
Isolate is the end point of hemp refinement. Crude extract is winterized to remove fats and waxes, distilled to concentrate cannabinoids, then crystallized and washed so that only CBD remains (Molecules 2022). The finished powder is certified at a stated purity on its certificate of analysis, with no measurable THC, terpenes or other cannabinoids.
Because nothing else is present, isolate has no plant taste or smell. Formulators dissolve it into carrier oils for tinctures, melt it into gummy bases, fill it into softgels, or blend it into salves at exact milligram amounts. It also gives the cleanest certificate of analysis: one cannabinoid line with a number, every other line ND.
That simplicity carries legal weight. The amended federal hemp definition, in force December 11, 2026, caps finished products at 0.4 mg total THC per innermost container (7 U.S.C. 1639o). Isolate-based products meet that cap by design.
Absorption is the known limitation. Pure CBD is poorly water soluble, so isolate depends on the carrier it is dissolved in. A 2025 crossover study used a standard isolate capsule as its reference formulation when comparing newer delivery systems (J Cannabis Res 2025).
