Live resin

Updated:

Definition

Live resin is an extract made from cannabis or hemp that was frozen immediately at harvest instead of dried and aged. Freezing preserves volatile terpenes that drying loses, so live resin has a stronger aroma and flavor. The term describes the starting material, not the cannabinoid content.

Most hemp is dried for days or weeks before extraction. That process drives off a large share of the plant's monoterpenes, the small volatile molecules behind most of its scent, and it can begin converting acid cannabinoids to their neutral forms (Bioengineering 2022). Live resin skips the drying step. Freshly cut plants are frozen within hours and kept frozen until they enter the extractor.

Cold extraction, usually with hydrocarbons or ethanol at low temperature, pulls cannabinoids and terpenes out of the frozen material with minimal heat (Molecules 2022). The product keeps a terpene profile that resembles the living plant, which is why live resin is prized in vape and concentrate markets.

Live resin says nothing about potency or THC content. Hemp live resin must still come from plants at or below the federal THC limit, and it is a full-spectrum material by nature, including trace THC. It also tends to carry more acid cannabinoids, so a certificate of analysis will show CBDA and THCa lines alongside the neutral forms.

Storage matters. Terpenes evaporate and oxidize at room temperature, so live resin is kept cold and sealed.
