Not detected (ND)

Updated:

Definition

A lab result meaning the compound was not seen above the method's detection floor. It is not zero. Its meaning depends on the limit of quantitation printed with it, which is why this store shows ND together with the LOQ and never prints an absence claim. Maryland's regulator rejects ND on a label.

"Not detected" means the laboratory saw no signal for the compound above its limit of detection. It says nothing about amounts below that floor, so it is read together with the limit of quantitation: ND at 0.025 ppm, the 7-hydroxymitragynine figure on the reports linked here (NarcoBrands COAs), is a far stronger statement than ND at 500 ppm would be.

Some regulators will not accept it at all. Maryland's Alcohol, Tobacco, and Cannabis Commission requires kratom labels to carry "affirmative amounts of BOTH mitragynine and 7-OH" and treats ranges, less-than signs and similar expressions as noncompliant (Maryland ATCC). That is why Maryland sits in this store's exclude column until a lot report returns a number.

The store's claims rules bar phrases that turn ND into an absence claim, because any leaf product may contain trace 7-hydroxymitragynine and the regulatory tests are a concentration and a ratio, not absence.
