THCV (tetrahydrocannabivarin)

Updated:

Definition

Tetrahydrocannabivarin, or THCV, is the propyl analog of THC, with a 3-carbon side chain instead of 5. In laboratory assays it behaves differently from THC, acting as a CB1 antagonist at low concentrations. It is counted as a tetrahydrocannabinol under the amended federal hemp definition.

Tetrahydrocannabivarin shares THC's ring structure but carries a 3-carbon side chain in place of THC's 5 (Rock 2013). The shorter chain changes its pharmacology. A systematic review describes THCV as a high-affinity CB1 ligand that acts as an antagonist in vitro, while THC is a partial agonist at the same receptor (McPartland 2015). The same review cautions that THCV only occasionally shows antagonist effects in living animals.

At higher doses THCV can behave more like THC. Because it is a tetrahydrocannabinol, it falls within the total tetrahydrocannabinols language of the amended federal hemp definition, which takes full effect December 11, 2026 (7 U.S.C. 1639o). Sellers who count only delta-9 THC toward the limit will miss it.

Natural THCV levels in hemp are low. Most THCV sold at retail is isolated from THCV-rich cultivars or produced by conversion, and the production route determines whether a product fits the natural cannabinoid category.

Labs report THCV and its acid THCVA as separate lines on an expanded cannabinoid panel.
