Water-soluble (nano-emulsion)
Updated:
Water-soluble CBD is cannabinoid oil broken into droplets measured in nanometers so it disperses evenly in water. It is more accurately called water-dispersible. Nano-emulsions are used in beverages and some tinctures, and animal data show higher absorption than plain oil.
CBD does not dissolve in water. It dissolves in oil. A water-soluble or nano-emulsified product uses surfactants and high shear or ultrasound to shatter the oil into droplets measured in nanometers, each coated so it stays suspended in water instead of separating. The product looks clear or milky and mixes into a drink without floating.
The goal is absorption. In a rat study, an ultrashear nano-emulsion of CBD reached oral bioavailability of 18.6 percent at 6 hours and 25.4 percent at 24 hours, which the authors described as several times the figure typical for CBD in plain oil (Med Cannabis Cannabinoids 2023). Human data are less tidy. A 2025 randomized crossover trial found that a standard isolate capsule outperformed an enhanced liquid formulation in total exposure when both were taken with food (J Cannabis Res 2025).
Food is its own variable. A systematic review reported roughly 5 times higher exposure when CBD was taken fed rather than fasted (Millar 2018), so the meal around the dose can matter as much as the emulsion.
Water-soluble is a marketing phrase. The chemistry is dispersion, not dissolution, and claims of a fixed multiple in absorption should trace to a study.
