What are CBDA and CBGA in dog tinctures?

Written by: Author pendingReviewed by: Reviewer pendingUpdated:

Answer

CBDA and CBGA are the raw acid forms of CBD and CBG, the molecules as the hemp plant makes them before heat converts them. They matter in dog products because a canine pharmacokinetic study found CBDA reached blood concentrations 2- to 3-fold higher than CBD at a matched dose (Frontiers in Veterinary Science). A COA should list each separately.

Flip a dog tincture over and the ingredient line may read "CBD + CBDA" or "full-spectrum hemp extract with CBDA and CBGA." Those extra letters are not filler. They describe which version of each cannabinoid is in the bottle, and in dogs the version changes how much gets absorbed.

What does the "A" stand for?

Answer

Acid. The hemp plant does not make CBD directly; it makes cannabidiolic acid, CBDA. The World Health Organization's critical review describes CBD as formed "following decarboxylation from a cannabidiolic acid precursor," meaning heat or time strips a carboxyl group off CBDA to yield CBD. The same relationship holds for CBG and CBGA, and for THC and THCA.

CBGA sits one step further back. A 2022 review in the International Journal of Molecular Sciences describes CBGA as the precursor to various phytocannabinoids: the plant's enzymes convert CBGA into CBDA, THCA and CBCA. Most CBGA has been consumed by harvest, so it appears in extracts at low levels unless the cultivar was bred to retain it.

A "raw" or minimally heated hemp extract keeps a large share of its cannabinoids in acid form. A decarboxylated extract has converted them to neutral CBD and CBG. Many dog tinctures use a blend, which is why the label lists both.

Why do dog tinctures emphasize CBDA?

Answer

Because of a canine absorption finding. A 2020 study in Frontiers in Veterinary Science dosed 6 beagles with 2 mg/kg of a CBD/CBDA extract in three forms: an MCT-oil tincture, a sunflower-lecithin tincture and a soft chew. In all three, CBDA and THCA reached serum concentrations 2- to 3-fold higher than CBD and THC. The discussion describes CBDA as absorbed at least twice as well as CBD over 24 hours. Half-lives were similar, around 4 hours for both forms in the oil tinctures.

That study also showed the carrier matters for acid forms: after two weeks of twice-daily dosing, the lecithin formulation produced steady-state CBDA levels of about 192 ng/mL versus 75 and 52 ng/mL for the MCT oil and the chew, while neutral CBD levels did not differ between forms. The oils in that study contained about 0.7 mg/mL of CBGA, but the serum assay did not report a CBGA result, so the canine absorption of CBGA specifically remains unmeasured.

The 12-week canine safety study in Animals used a product described as 2 mg/kg of total CBD, counting CBD plus CBDA together. That is a common labeling convention on pet products: "total CBD" or "total cannabinoids" often means the neutral and acid forms added together. Dosing by weight requires knowing which convention the label uses.

How should CBDA and CBGA appear on a lab report?

Answer

As separate rows. A certificate of analysis for a raw or blended extract should list CBD, CBDA, CBG, CBGA, THC and THCA individually, each with a mg/mL or mg/g result, and then may report totals. The total rows use a conversion factor because an acid molecule is heavier than its neutral form; a lab that reports "total CBD" should state the factor it applied. A COA showing only "CBD" on a product labeled "CBD + CBDA" is incomplete.

The same reading applies to THCA, and it carries legal weight. The amended federal hemp definition in 7 U.S.C. 1639o counts total tetrahydrocannabinols "including tetrahydrocannabinolic acid," so a raw extract's THCA line adds to its THC line when the 0.4 mg per-container cap takes effect December 11, 2026. A raw, full-spectrum dog tincture that is ND for delta-9 THC but carries measurable THCA is not ND for total THC.

Does a dog need the acid forms?

Answer

The data say acid forms are absorbed better, not that they do anything different once absorbed. No controlled canine trial has compared a CBDA-rich product against a CBD-only product on any outcome. What a buyer can act on is the arithmetic: if a label's "total CBD" includes CBDA, the per-dose number means something different than on an isolate product, and the COA is the only place to see the split.
