Crystal-resistant distillate (CRD)
Updated:
Crystal-resistant distillate, or CRD, is a hemp distillate formulated so its CBD stays liquid instead of crystallizing. Processors keep or add enough minor cannabinoids and terpenes that CBD cannot form a pure crystal lattice. CRD is used in vape cartridges and oils where solidification would be a defect.
Pure CBD wants to be a solid. At high purity, CBD in a distillate will nucleate and grow crystals over days or weeks, which turns a vape cartridge cloudy or seizes an oil. Crystal-resistant distillate solves that by keeping the CBD fraction low enough, and the mixture diverse enough, that crystals never organize.
Processors reach that state two ways. They can stop refinement earlier so more CBG, CBC, CBN and terpenes remain, or they can blend isolated minor cannabinoids and terpenes back into a standard distillate (Molecules 2022). The result is a stable amber oil that still tests high in CBD.
CRD is normally sold as broad-spectrum, meaning THC has been remediated to non-detect, or as full-spectrum with trace THC. Either way, the certificate of analysis lists every cannabinoid, and total THC counts toward the federal hemp limit (7 U.S.C. 1639o).
Because CRD is an intermediate, it matters whether it is sold as an ingredient or as a final product. The amended hemp definition excludes intermediate hemp-derived cannabinoid products that are marketed or sold as a final product, so bulk CRD belongs in the business-to-business channel.
