ISO/IEC 17025

Updated:

Definition

The international standard for the competence of testing and calibration laboratories. Accreditation to it means an independent body has audited the laboratory's methods, equipment, staff and records for the tests in its scope and issued a number that can be looked up. Texas requires kratom testing at an ISO 17025 laboratory.

ISO/IEC 17025 sets the requirements a laboratory must meet to be judged competent to produce valid results. An accreditation body assesses the laboratory against it and grants a scope listing the methods covered; method validation, including limits of detection and quantitation, is part of what is audited (ISO). The reports linked from this store print "ISO/IEC 17025:2017 Acc. 85368" in their header.

Texas permits retailers to sell only kratom products "tested and labeled" under its chapter, with testing at an ISO 17025 laboratory (Texas SB 497). Payment underwriters for kratom likewise ask for third-party laboratory results. Accreditation says the laboratory is competent for the methods in scope; it does not add tests the client did not order, so an accredited potency panel is still only a potency panel.
