What does not detected mean for 7-OH?

Written by: Author pendingReviewed by: Reviewer pendingUpdated:

Answer

Below the method's detection floor, not zero. The reports linked here state 7-hydroxymitragynine as not detected with a limit of quantitation of 0.025 ppm, which is 0.000025 mg per gram against the pending federal line of 1 mg per gram (91 FR 65370).

What do ND, LOD and LOQ mean?

Answer

ND, not detected, means the laboratory saw no signal above its limit of detection. The limit of quantitation is the higher floor above which the laboratory will put a number on the result. A result can be detected but below LOQ, in which case it is reported as "less than LOQ." On the reports linked here the mitragynine method's LOD is 0.018 ppm and its LOQ 0.054 ppm (NarcoBrands COAs).

Why print the LOQ next to ND?

Answer

Because ND without a floor is meaningless. ND at an LOQ of 0.025 ppm says 7-OH is below 0.000025 mg per gram; ND at an LOQ of 500 ppm would say only that it is below 0.5 mg per gram. The pending federal line is 1 mg per gram (91 FR 65370), so the floor decides whether the result proves anything.

Why is Maryland excluded if the result is ND?

Answer

Because its regulator requires "affirmative amounts of BOTH mitragynine and 7-OH" on the label and says ranges, less-than signs and similar expressions are noncompliant (Maryland ATCC). ND is not a number. Maryland reopens when a lot report returns one.

Does this store claim absence?

Answer

No. An absence phrase is barred by the store's own claims rules because any leaf product may contain trace 7-OH and the regulatory tests are a concentration and a ratio, not absence. The product page prints the result and the LOQ, and nothing more.
