What is a typical MOQ for wholesale CBD?
Written by: Author pendingReviewed by: Reviewer pendingUpdated:
For finished goods, the practical minimum is one case per SKU, and pricing improves at volume breaks. Native Shopify B2B enforces this with minimum quantity rules, case-pack increments and up to 10 price breaks per product (Shopify). White label and bulk ingredients carry higher minimums set per run.
MOQ, minimum order quantity, is the smallest order a supplier will accept. In wholesale CBD it is set at three different levels depending on what you are buying: finished goods under an existing brand, finished goods under your own label, or bulk ingredients. This page describes how each is structured here and why the numbers differ. Account requirements are at What documents do wholesale buyers need?.
How are minimums set for finished goods?
By the case, not the bottle. Products are packed in fixed case counts, and the wholesale catalog sells in those increments. Native Shopify B2B handles this directly: minimum quantity rules define "the fewest number of an item that can be purchased at one time," increments are whole numbers of 1 or more and can differ by product, and both minimum and maximum apply per variant (Shopify). A tincture packed 12 to a case therefore shows a minimum of 12 and an increment of 12.
Pricing improves with volume. Shopify allows "up to 10 price breaks per product," applied per variant, so a SKU can carry one price at a single case and lower prices at 5 and 10 cases (Shopify). The breaks are visible in the catalog once the account is approved. An opening-order minimum in dollars applies on top of per-SKU minimums; the figure is set in the wholesale terms. TODO: confirm opening-order minimum and reorder minimum with Mike.
What are the three catalogs?
Shopify's B2B features on Basic, Grow and Advanced plans, released April 2, 2026, include "up to 3 active B2B catalogs" assigned through Markets, along with company profiles, payment terms, volume pricing, vaulted cards and U.S. ACH (Shopify changelog). Those three slots are used as:
- Retail. The public storefront. No minimums, consumer pricing.
- Wholesale. Case-pack minimums and tiered pricing for approved retailers. Prepaid by default; net terms off until a payment history exists.
- Distributor. Reserved for accounts that resell to other retailers. Higher minimums, deeper pricing, pallet-level increments, and assigned only after review.
The same product can sit in all three with different minimums and prices. Which catalog you see is decided by your company profile, not by a code.
What are typical MOQs for white label?
Higher, and set per production run rather than per case. A white label run has fixed costs: label design and print, a dedicated fill, and batch-specific lab testing. Suppliers recover those by setting a minimum number of units per SKU per run, typically in the hundreds to low thousands depending on format, with tinctures at the lower end and gummies higher because of the batch size of a cook. Exact figures are quoted per project. TODO: confirm white label run minimums per format with Mike.
Because the brand on the label becomes the responsible labeler, white label orders also require a label compliance review before print. See What is white label CBD and who is the labeler?.
What about bulk isolate and distillate?
Bulk ingredients are sold by the kilogram to registered manufacturers through a separate business-to-business program. They are intermediate hemp-derived cannabinoid products under the amended federal definition and may not be marketed or sold as a final product or directly to consumers (7 U.S.C. 1639o), so they never appear in the retail or wholesale catalogs. Minimums start at one kilogram per lot with a certificate of analysis per lot. TODO: confirm bulk minimums and per-state exclusions with Mike.
Does MOQ change how orders ship?
Yes. Wholesale orders ship in plain master cartons. UPS requires Adult Signature Required on all U.S. shipments containing hemp or hemp derivatives and will not accept hemp from any location that sells marijuana (UPS), so the receiving location needs a person able to sign during business hours. Freight quotes replace parcel rates above a weight threshold. Sales tax is not charged on resale orders once a valid resale certificate is on file; the MTC multijurisdiction form covers 36 states (MTC).
