How is CBD shipped, and why do some orders need an adult signature?

Non-detect CBD ships by USPS or UPS in plain packaging. Anything containing hemp-derived THC ships UPS only, because UPS requires Adult Signature Required service on all U.S. shipments with hemp derivatives (UPS). Those orders also need 21+ ID verification at checkout and ship only to states that allow them.
Two carriers, two sets of rules, and one question that decides which applies: does the product contain detectable THC? If not, it ships like any other supplement. If it does, it ships the way alcohol does. Here is how each path works and what you will see at the door.
How does non-detect CBD ship?
Isolate and broad-spectrum products with ND THC on their lab reports ship by USPS or UPS, your choice at checkout. USPS Publication 52, section 453.37, permits hemp and hemp-based products including CBD with THC not exceeding 0.3 percent to be mailed domestically when the mailer complies with federal, state and local law and keeps compliance records such as lab results and licenses "for no less than 3 years after the date of mailing" (USPS Pub 52). Those records are kept for every batch shipped here.
Packaging is plain. UPS requires that labeling and outer box markings not identify the contents of raw hemp shipments (UPS), and the same practice is applied to every order: no product names or hemp leaves on the outside of the box. No signature is required unless you choose it or the carrier's own rules for your address require one.
Why do some orders need an adult signature?
Because the carrier says so. UPS's hemp policy states: "All shipments within the U.S. containing hemp or hemp derivatives must use UPS Adult Signature Required service" (UPS). For non-detect CBD this store relies on USPS for signature-free delivery; for anything with hemp-derived THC, including THCa flower, delta-9 gummies and THC seltzers, there is no USPS path that fits state age rules, so those orders ship UPS Adult Signature Required without exception.
What that means at delivery:
- A driver will not leave the package unattended. An adult must sign in person.
- If no adult is available, UPS will attempt again or hold the package for pickup at a UPS location with ID.

Those same orders require third-party 21+ identity verification at checkout, and the cart only accepts addresses in states where the product lane is allowed under /learn/cbd-legality-by-state. Age is checked twice: once by the ID verification and again by the driver.
What will UPS and USPS not carry at all?
- Vape products. UPS prohibits hemp derivatives intended for consumption through an aerosolized solution across its U.S. network (UPS).
- Synthetic or lab-made cannabinoids. UPS prohibits "any synthetic or lab-made cannabinoid compound and their derivatives." Delta-8, HHC and similar products are not sold here for that reason among others.
- International and military mail. USPS bars hemp products from international mail, including APO, FPO and DPO addresses (USPS Pub 52).
- Marijuana. UPS will not accept shipments of hemp from any location that also sells marijuana, which is why the fulfillment partner handles hemp only.
After December 11, 2026, the federal hemp definition changes to a total THC standard with a 0.4 mg per container cap (7 U.S.C. 1639o), and UPS requires raw hemp COAs showing total THC including THCa under 0.3 percent from that date. Products that fall outside the definition lose their carrier path on the same day.
How fast will my order ship?
Orders are dispatched by the fulfillment partner on business days. The FTC's Mail, Internet, or Telephone Order Merchandise Rule requires sellers to have a reasonable basis for any shipping promise and, if none is stated, to ship within 30 days or obtain the buyer's consent to a delay or refund the order (FTC, 16 CFR Part 435). Transit time is the carrier's and is quoted at checkout for your address and service. Tracking is emailed when the label is created.
