Schedule I

Updated:

Definition

The most restrictive schedule under the federal Controlled Substances Act, listed at 21 CFR 1308.11. Mitragynine pseudoindoxyl, MGM-15 and MGM-16 were added temporarily on 2026-08-26; 7-hydroxymitragynine above a threshold is proposed. A Schedule I article cannot be mailed by any carrier. States keep their own Schedule I lists.

Federal Schedule I is the list at 21 CFR 1308.11. The temporary order of 2026-08-26 added mitragynine pseudoindoxyl, MGM-15 and MGM-16 at paragraphs (h)(89) to (91), effective that day and expiring 2028-08-26 unless extended or made permanent (91 FR 54948). Anyone without a Schedule I registration had to surrender held quantities. Kratom leaf, mitragynine and 7-hydroxymitragynine are not on the federal list; 7-hydroxymitragynine above a threshold is proposed.

States keep their own schedules, and several have placed kratom itself on them: Alabama, Arkansas, Vermont and Wisconsin by statute years ago, Louisiana from 2025-08-01, Kansas from 2026-07-01, Connecticut by regulation from 2026-03-25, and Massachusetts by emergency regulation 105 CMR 726.000 from 2026-08-28 (Mass.gov). Kentucky's 400 ppm rule and Ohio's extract rule are also state Schedule I listings. A federal Schedule I article is not mailable by any carrier, which is why a published federal order triggers this store's kill switch.
