Why does this store not ship to California?

Written by: Author pendingReviewed by: Reviewer pendingUpdated:

Answer

Because California's Department of Public Health has told retailers that selling kratom "in any form for consumption" is not permitted under Health and Safety Code 110555, that products are adulterated, and that the department may embargo and seize them; state agents visited more than 2,600 sites by 2026-02-08 (CDPH letter).

Is there a California kratom statute?

Answer

No. The ban is by enforcement. A consumer warning on 2025-10-24 and a letter to licensees on 2026-01-09 state that kratom and 7-OH products are "adulterated and illegal to sell to people of any age" under the Sherman Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Law, and that the department may "embargo, seize, and impound" them (CDPH letter). Alcoholic beverage control agents had visited more than 2,600 retail sites by 2026-02-08 and seizures exceeded $5 million (Lake County News).

Does the ban reach online orders?

Answer

The letter addresses selling or marketing "in any form for consumption" to Californians, which covers a package mailed to a California address. Every published seller list the research reviewed that was updated in 2026 excludes California; two older lists do not, and those lists are out of date.

What about the city bans?

Answer

San Diego, Oceanside, Newport Beach and Jurupa Valley banned kratom before the state acted. They remain in this store's local layer for completeness, but the state row makes them moot.

Will California reopen?

Answer

Only if the state changes course. If it does, a Proposition 65 lead notice would be required for kratom products; the hook is kept on the product warnings page. The store's table is edited and the change logged on the legality hub.
